Digital Textiles Summer School

  • Amma Centre Market Street Armagh, Northern Ireland, BT61 7BU United Kingdom (map)

This series of workshops will give participants the opportunity to experiment with a variety of digital fabrication processes and future making techniques and understand how we can use these alongside traditional making skills. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment and use these techniques to customise/repurpose/modify a wearable piece.

Workshop 1: 10th August, 10am - 4pm

Heritage and Exploration

An investigation into Armagh’s fashion and textile heritage and discussing how it is relevant to a modern context. We will visit the Armagh County Museum for a behind-the-scenes look at their costume collection dating from 1600s. We will assess construction, design and functionality and document with drawing and photography.

We will look at examples of future making in practice in contemporary textile contexts, including cross sector references to science and technology.

We will get hands on to learn the basics of 3D printing, designing your own piece on 3D software and experimenting with lace-like structures using flexible materials. We will also look at wearable electronics and how to embroider LEDs into your designs.

Workshop 2: 11th August, 10am - 4pm

Exploration and Ideation

A chance to experiment further with future making processes. This session will be focused on adding colour and pattern through vinyl-cutting, laser-cutting and heat reactive dyes.

Using one or several of these techniques, we will brainstorm and finalise concepts and initial designs.

Workshop 3: 12th August, 10am - 4pm

Making and Realisation

Participants will bring their ideas to life, with support to adopt these new techniques.  This workshop will be entirely hands-on with time given to experiment and develop their final piece.

This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in creativity and innovation who wants to get hands-on and learn new skills. Registration is open to anyone aged 15+, no prior experience is required.
